For a manageable first Trader Joe’s trip, start with one meal, one dip and one sweet snack: Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese, Roasted Garlic Hummus and Double Chocolate Wafer Cookies. Choose Maple Leaf Cookies instead of the chocolate wafers if maple is the flavor you want.
This starter basket comes from one editor’s actual tasting history. It gives you three distinct things to try without turning the first visit into a large haul. The meal is a squash-based option, so use the frozen pasta guide if that flavor does not appeal.
One meal: Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese
The editor rated it “love” after trying it on September 6. It currently sits first of 17 Meals & Prepared Foods in the personal finds list, with three recorded comparisons involving it.
The retailer’s product record lists squash, mezzi rigatoni, Gouda, Cheddar, Parmesan and herbs and spices. Choose it if a squash-and-cheese meal sounds like something you would enjoy. Its ranking is a useful recommendation, rather than a reason to ignore your own taste.
One dip: Roasted Garlic Hummus
The editor rated Roasted Garlic Hummus “love” at the September 6 picnic. In the September 7 snapshot, it is fifth of six products in the personal Sauces, Dips & Condiments list, with three recorded comparisons involving it. Being fifth in a small list does not erase the recorded positive reaction.
The current Trader Joe’s product listing names chickpeas, sesame tahini and roasted garlic among the ingredients. Choose it if you want a dip with that flavor profile. Bring it home with something you already like dipping, rather than buying several unfamiliar products at once.
The hummus recommendation uses the editor’s tasting of this product and flavor. The package image and ingredient link show Trader Joe’s current listing, checked September 7.
One sweet snack: Double Chocolate Wafer Cookies
The August 24 tasting received a “love” and the note “Extremely solid.” It ranks second of 16 sweets in the editor’s list, with two recorded comparisons involving it. Trader Joe’s describes cocoa wafers with chocolate filling containing hazelnuts.
If maple is more appealing, swap in Maple Leaf Cookies. Their August 27 note singles out a distinct maple flavor. They rank fourth of 16 sweets and also received a “love,” with two recorded comparisons involving them.
How do I keep the first trip manageable?
Pick the products that match how you expect to eat this week. Check package ingredients, storage needs and the shelf price before buying. A ranked recommendation cannot tell you how much freezer space you have or whether a package suits your needs.
If a suggested product is missing from your store, choose one alternative in that category rather than treating the basket as a checklist you must complete. The official listings were checked September 7, 2026; they are not local inventory promises.
What should I do after trying the basket?
Record the detail that would affect a repeat purchase. That might be a flavor you want again or something you found too sweet. Our guide to remembering products you liked uses real examples of both.
The tasting evidence comes from one finds editor’s personal record. The September 7, 2026 snapshot contains 58 tasted products. Ranks below are positions in that editor’s category list, not a community vote; they can change as more products are ranked. These ranks span different categories and should not be compared as a single score across the basket.
