The Trader Joe's value audit: four price and size changes we could actually verify
We compared two dated Trader Joe's catalog snapshots and found a shrinking ham, a smaller chocolate sardine tin, a pricier lemon curd, and one genuine bagel price drop.

A value audit is exactly what it sounds like. Save Trader Joe's own catalog data on two different dates, line the same SKUs up side by side, and see which numbers moved. No taste test, no vibes, no screenshot of a stranger's receipt. Just price, package size, serving count, and unit cost, each in its own column.
The spark, honestly, was the paper bag discourse. Shoppers and crew members posted photos of shorter Trader Joe's paper bags at some stores this summer, but Trader Joe's has published no old and new dimensions and no rollout, so that claim stays an unverified shopper report. The food, though, we could check. Two dated catalog snapshots, July 28 (store 701) and August 14 (store 544), turned up four real changes: two shrinking packages, one price hike, and one price drop actually worth celebrating.

The July 28 snapshot lists SKU 078176 at $4.99 for 8 oz, with about four 56g servings. The August 14 snapshot keeps the $4.99 price but lists 7 oz, while still claiming the same four 56g servings. That math does not close: four 56g servings total 224g, and a 7 oz package is 198g. Unit cost climbs from about 62 cents to about 71 cents per ounce, roughly 14.3% higher for the identical price tag. One caveat: the current catalog package art still reads 8 oz, so the shelf package is the tiebreaker.

Price held at $3.29 in both snapshots, but the size field for SKU 080507 moved from 3.87 oz on July 28 to 3.67 oz on August 14. The listed servings, about four at 26g each, stayed put, and four 26g servings total 104g, which does match 3.67 oz after rounding. Unit cost rises from about 85 cents to about 90 cents per ounce, roughly 5.4% higher. The current catalog art still shows 3.87 oz, so this is a confirmed catalog change with an unresolved shelf package.

This one is a plain price increase, no package mystery attached. SKU 007850 listed at $3.99 on July 28 and $4.29 on August 14, with the 10.5 oz jar and its roughly 10 one-tablespoon servings unchanged in both snapshots. Unit cost moves from 38 cents to about 41 cents per ounce, and from about 40 to 43 cents per listed serving, both roughly 7.5% higher.

The audit's one piece of good news. SKU 092172 held its 18 oz package while the price fell from $2.99 on July 28 to $2.49 on August 14. Unit cost drops from about 17 cents to about 14 cents per ounce, roughly 16.7% lower. Neither snapshot publishes a serving count, so we are not inventing one.
